Appearance:
Virgil is tall and lanky, more evenly-proportioned than a lot of his other teenaged peers, except for his hands, which are broad and long-fingered; very agile and deft. His fingers have callouses from the gitar, harp and other stringed instruments.
He has a triangular face, with sharp cheekbones and wide, guileless eyes. His lips are full, often pursed to whistle or tootle aimless on a pipe. His face is mobile and expressive, and usually his emotions are plain to read on it.
His hair is an average black, shaggy and unkempt since Virgil never pays much attention to his appearance. it is rather long, hanging into his eyes and tickling the nape of his neck; any shorter and the wiry strands would spike out uncontrollably.
Virgil's eyes are a soft gray-brown, almost always twinkling with humor or bright with a creative spark as he composes some new tune in his head.

Personality:
The first thing many people notice about Virgil is that he's always humming, whistling, tapping, or otherwise something. However he can make noise and string it into anything remotely musical, he's constantly doing it. His specialty is the writing of choral songs -- songs anyone can sing, with catchy tunes that get stuck in the head all day long.
He's passing fair at composing instrumental music and playing instruments, but he composes lyrics the best of all. His voice is a pleasant mid-range tenor, though he was a soprano before his voice broke.
Virgil is a bit ADD -- he has a short attention span at times. He is optomistic and cheerful, and quite a mischievous prankster. His jokes are always well-meant, except for the few enemies he has who deserve a nasty surprise. Even then, he never plays truly malicious tricks on anyone.
He can be a bit arrogant; he knows he's a good composer, and he tends to rub it in a bit too much (which is another side-effect of the ADD). He's a tiny bit self-centered to go along with the arrogance. No self-confidence issues here -- exactly the opposite. Virgil can be thick-headed and overconfident, and has gotten himself into a lot of trouble because of it.
Virgil, like his flit, is also quite hormonal. He flirts frequently with any woman he finds acceptably attractive, and takes women to his bed frequently. The restriction on sexual activity for weyrlings will be very hard for Virgil to stick to, should he Impress. He hasn't figured out yet that his sexuality might lean a bit; maybe, if he gets a dragon, this will come to light.

History:
Virgil hasn't seen much of Pern. He was born and raised in the Northern Harper Hall, surrounded by music since he was a babe. He proved to be clever and picked up new concepts quickly, and his creative talent writing catchy songs was discovered as soon as he could write and read music.
His parents cultivated that creativity (spoiling him a bit, thus feeding his ego and his arrogance), and by the time he was apprentice age he was already a fairly good songwriter.
He got into the typical apprentice tricks, carousing and horsing around with the other boys, and generally having himself a fairly good time. His life for the most part was relatively average, for a boy bord and bred in Harper Hall.
By eighteen when he walked the tables, he had a bit of a name for himself with his catchy songs. His parents got him a fire lizard egg as a congratulatory gift for becoming a journeyman -- it hatched his jade, which he named Erato.
He was sent to New Cove by the MasterHarper, since the Southern Harper Hall was short on journeymen. Virgil never intended to become a candidate, but one of the Search dragons is being unusually friendly toward him...

This little flitter is built and colored more like a green, though with a lighter, yellow-tinged hide, with the typical glossy finish. Erato had a definitely jade-like temperament, being exceedingly vain and self-centered. She is also an outrageous flirt, and Rises at least twice a month.
