The powerful, graceful figure of a Ruby prowled restlessly from one side of the weyr to the other, managing to avoid destroying anything sitting about. Her body, a red so dark it looked nearly black, curved, brindled wings mantled slightly as her head, a few shades lighter than her body, turned, eye locking intently on some distant object. Her lips twitched, cuving into a smirk as her claws raked the stone beneath her.
K'ist looked up from the chair he lounged in, his honey-toned eyes curious. For a moment, he didn't know what bothered the dragon, but a small clock in his head went off, reminding him what time it was, and that she was indeed due to Rise. His brows knitted together, distaste coloring his features as he rose, and shook his head. Ignoring the Ruby in favor of walking, he started his way to the bowl, knowing well that it would not take long at all for the dragno to head that way of her own accord. He'd be first there, easily, though it didn't matter. Ziinyth enjoyed her Flights, and weighing herself down with meat wasn't like her. Dressed in tawny leggins and a loose ivory shirt, his hair a tussled, attractive mess, and his almost delicate feature, he made a nice sight, seeming almost as if he were taking a simple stroll through the Weyr, not getting ready for the Flight that longered mere seconds away.
Just in time the rider reached the bowl, for no sooner did he than Ziinyth's brassy voice rang peircingly through the caverns, and she shot off the ledge of their weyr, flingnig herself to the air with splayed wings. She was hungry, monsterously so. Her body screamed for food, and she was willing enough to oblidge it, to and extent. Silently, she felled a buck, her claws digging deeply into the flesh as her weight bore down, her jaws parting to wrap almost dainitly around the throat of the beast, sucking dry it's life-force. There was no battle of wills in this matter, for Ziinyth was no young thing who knew nothing of life and who knew not how to control herself. No, she'd seen twelve turns, more even than the Senior Queen of the Weyr, and she knew the routine well, she kenw the consequences of gorging herself of heavy meat.
Tossing aside her first kill, she eyed a second, pondering it seemed, if she would need it. Her hide nearly glowing, the scales glittering all the more wonderously, she lunged at the nearest creature, dragging it to herself and draining it as well before letting it fall away, her gaze shifting away from food and to males.
A sly smile pulled ta her lips, her neck arching coyly, her tail swishing tauntingly behind her, and crooned to those males who'd gathered already. Oh there were some fine beasts here already, there were. She gave herselfa shake, starting at the tip of her nose and letting it ripple to the tip of her forked tail before crouching and jumping to the air, her wings sweeping broadly to pull air under her as she tore upward, and with altitue came ehr voice it seemed, for as she rose higher and higher, her jaws parted to let out a roar, throaty and lusty, her eyes taking the red hues of passion and desire. Let them come, let them try. She was ready.
Even as such thoughts raced through the Ruby's mind, K'ist let the joining happen, felt the mental link form and tighten to a near unbreakable bond, one that would allow him in the end to keep the dragon alive, to keep her with him. This was one of the rare times when Ziinyth brought joy into his life, for always he found an interesting partner, one who went to lengths to please, just as the male who caught the Ruby did. His vision blurred for a heartbeat as it shifted from the ground to the sky, changing for the eyes of a human to the eyes of a dragon, the sky spreading before his eyes in an endless expanse, Rukbat skining brightly, the warmth of it only adding to the heat of the boiling blood.
Ziinyth-K'ist smirked as she soared, the world was hers, all was hers, for now. This was her moment, a moment when in the eyes of those who chased her sh was the most important thing, she was the best, the greatest prize they could ever hope for. How she loved that.

Zhek looked up from his weyr ledge when he noticed Ziinyth pacing. Her dark hide aglow with health, she looked particularly breathtaking, her blood-colored scales glinting. She was simply mouthwatering.
K'tal noticed his dragon's distraction and groaned. Usually Zhek didn't take much of an interest in low-ranking females, but it had been a while since he'd chased. A guy had needs. And this ruby was Rising at just the moment the big bronze had been contemplating joining the chase for the next female to Rise. Lucky him, the opportunity presented itself before it could slip his mind!
"Oh fine, you big lump. Go chase the ruby's tail," K'tal grumbled when Zhek turned plaintively wheeling eyes to his rider. The big bronze crooned happily and slithered out of his couch, waiting crouched at the lip of the weyr ledge for his rider to climb aboard.
K'tal heaved himself onto Zhek's shoulder before the bronze leaped. Fell would be a more apt term: Zhek shoved himself off the ledge and opened his wings, leveling into a steep glide instead of flapping to keep altitude. The big bronze kept one eye on the blooding ruby as he flew.
It perplexed him as to why Ziinyth blooded her kill -- she had no future clutch riding on the outcome of the Flight. Still, it would make the chase more interesting for him, and that was a plus.
Zhek backwinged, touching down just as the ruby discarded her second kill and eyes the group of males awaiting her launch into the sky. He felt her eyes travel over him and crooned at the female. he fanned his wings grandly, letting light play over the coppery tinge that contrasted with the redder, mahogany hue of his bronzen hide.
When she threw her dark red body into the sky, Zhek was one of the frontrunners after her, an answering warble bubbling up from his broad chest as he pumped his long wings after the glittering, shining ruby beacon. Splendid Ziinyth! You outshine even a queen, lovely Ziinyth, with your beauty and grace! None of these others are worthy to fly in your wake, O jewel of the skies! They cannot hope to match you in the air. I will give it my all, beautiful one, and I shall make sure none of these puny males dare disgrace your lovely name by twining with your glowing body. Knowing the ruby's vanity, Zhek used it to his advantage, flattering her and feeding her ego in the hopes of winning Ziinyth's favor.
K'tal just about rolled his eyes. The big bronze was shameless when the mood struck him, but K'tal had to admit that he was clever. The bronzerider stood with the others surrounding K'ist, his eyes like the others glued to the wide blue sky as the swirling rainbow of color undulated through the air, tipped by a dark red spearhead that glinted and flashed in the sunlight. K'tal's mind joined with Zhek's, and the Eden-bred duo surged through the skies as one.
Zhek-K'tal bugled again, this time in challenge to the dragons competing against him for the shining ruby gem flaunting herself just ahead of them. Let those fools try and best him, but Zhek-K'tal was better. He was bred of Eden Weyr, home of the mighty blacks and ravens! Brother of the biggest black on Pern! He was the biggest bronze in Crystal Cavern, so who were the rest to him?

Ziinyth took note of each male, though one naturaly stood out against them all. The massive Bronze, not born of Crystal Cavern, who's fluid compliments shamed those lusty declarations of the rest. Indeed, no queen could ever match her so ar as she was concerned, and this Bronze seemed to know it! It pleased her greatly, and added to her swelling ego, Compliments were too easy to use on her, for so vain was the Ruby that she was prone to forget all else, including all the other males who vied for her attention with words that paled miserably to those of the Bronze.
She was aware by many of the confused feelings the males gave off they didn't know why she'd blooded, but she did. She knew all too well that it would give her more energy, would give her more stamina through the Flight, and she'd have no concern with any eager beast catching her too soon. She loved her Flights, loved the attention lavished on her by those who sought to win her over, to woo her with words and with actions. She would draw it out for so long as she could, not like the silly Greens who knew nothing, who would leap from their ledges to the skies and fly. They were too easily caught by such actions, for they were not built to last long in the air, even if they were quick and agile it took only a short time for them to exhaust themselves. Their moments of glory were short lived, and Ziinyth was not like them, for she basked in attention that was well deserved.
Her wings, dark expanses that clouded the sky, rowed through the air, lifting her higher and higher, until she burst into a bank of clouds, and through the top of it, hanging over it all and looking out over the endless plains of white cumulous. Beautiful. She was the darkest thing in the sky here, she stood out starkly against the almost innocent perfection of it all, the pale blue that shimmered above, the blinging yellow-gold brilliance of Rukbat, the fluffy whiteness of the clouds as pure as the driven snow. ((LOL I just realized why I named silvyth's Flight Driven ><))
Her wings moved slowly, only enough to keep her stationary, waiting to see who would be the first to appear from below, to see who would be the firs to break through the barrier of blindness to see the Ruby prize lingering, surely the most glorious of sights. Her dark hide, dark enough that were it not for the scales many might think her a small, female Black from a distance, contrasted with the rest of this untouched world, her scale sparkling in the unfiltered rays of sunlight. The heat of lust and blood pounded through her veins, the still air no help to her beating heart.
While she waited, her mind churned. she knew that she had not been far ahead of them all, that Zhek had been one of the closest to her, and that she had not much time to think at all. Of the males so far she favored the Bronze behemoth most, for he was the largest, the most powerful, a king, and the best with words. He had lavished a plethera of complitments on her as he rose to chase, and she had no doubt given a chance he would live to his promise. Logically he was the best choice, and she had to agree with that logic. With a smirk, she listened as she heard the rush of wind and wing approaching, casting aside her pondering to trumpet again, calling out to her males, calling them to her.

Zhek-K'tal rowed his great, copper and rust wings through the air, pushing it behind him to propel himself ever faster through the air after the glittering ruby beauty. The roiling backdraft of air stirred up by his passing made several of the males nearest him falter, fighting to steady themselves in the chaotic churning air. Zhek-K'tal's wingtips clipped the nearest dragon, a brown, on the head as the bold beast tried to get ahead of him. He hissed at the brown, lurching to the head of the pack. This one would be all his, with no interference from any lowly brown.
As Ziinyth dissapeared into the clouds and soon a brassy bugle echoed down from the ruby's maw, Zhek-K'tal uttered a throaty warble in answer. He broke through the clouds first, his metallic hide glinting in Rukbat's shining light as he executed a nimble wingover that belied his size. Lovely one! You are truly a queen in your own right, though nature's cruelty deigned you not the body of a queen. But what is any other female to you, beautiful Ziinyth? You are better than any here, the worthless lot! Inferior though I am to your magnificence, I swear to you I will best these other fools, for they are the lowest of the low and unworthy to kiss the ground you trod, the big bronze declared, while a sly croon rolled from his coppery muzzle.
Zhek-K'tal slipped forward as a few more males burst through the cloud cover; not as many as had started, the dragons with less endurance having already dropped out. Zhek-K'tal spared a scronful snort for the remainder. The rest had nothing on him, by far the biggest dragon in the air, with the longest wingspan, perfect for extended flight. He was a bronze, bred to chase queens, so it was comical to think that the other males would be able to best him here, now.
He rode the slipstream of air created by Ziinyth's flight, quickly catching up to the slow-flying ruby. He knew she was only stalling to let her pursuers catch up and would pull a clever stunt to get out of reach as soon as he got too close, so Zhek kept up his speed as he raced toward the shimmering female.

It was, as she had expected, Zhek who burst from the clouds first, the great Bronze breaking through the wall of whiteness to show his magnifigance for all to see, but most especially for her eyes. As the beast rolled, preforming a wingover she would have doubted him capable of for all his size, and she was thoroughly impressed, almost more so by that than by the effets of his silver tongue. He was more dangerous than an asp in some manners, as sly as a fox, cunning and strong. Were she just any female, or even a normal Ruby who hadn't thought to bolster her strength with hot blood, the Flight would have been over long before she'd reached this altitude, long before now.
It showed in the drastically reduced numbers, those males who were unable to keep up, those Browns who'd thought themselves the best at long Flights. Not even they stood a chance against the clever Ruby, who had her priorities down, who knew the best bet for an interesting run.
Her spine tingled in reaction to the compliments raineddown on her, and she eyed her remaining contenders eagerly. A few attended to woo her still with words, though weariness marked their voices, and she scoffed at them. Oh, it was true that even she was starting to wear, for she was no queen in her build, and even with her added energy she was unable to last for too much loner But there was one last trick she wanted to play, one last act before the curtain fell. She kenw who would catch her, even a blind man would be able to see it.
Her head turned, neck curving sensuously as she looked coyly at the Bronze over her shoulder, from her maw spilled a low croon. Do you think you've won yet? Her voice was low and lusty, filled with desire and passion. She was so close to calling it done, to spinning on a wingtip and grabbing the Bronze in her need. Not yet though, she reminded ehrself cautiously. Not yet. One moer thing, one more game to see if they can match. To see if he can match.
Her slow flight moved to a speedy one in a wingbeat, rocketing foward and away from Zhek and the pathetic males who lingered father back. Her freedom spanned before her, stretched as far as the eye could see. But the freedom was not what she wanted, was not her goal, for only moments after she surged away, she turned her nose upward and flipped, curving through the air, her belly exposed fully for a moment to Rukbat and the light played over the scales and the hide. She was a gem, more precious than even the stone she was named for.
Her flip ended as she righted herself, now behind Zhek, and ahead of the rest, right where she wanted to be. With a rumble of amusement, she let her gaze slide over the king's back, over the play of muscles in his shoulders and haunches, with each beat of his wings, ah yes, she chose well. If so, catch me. She was only inches behind him, close enough that had she the desire she could have grabbed his tail in her jaws, though she wouldn't do that, not considering he was her choice of the males, and she was no violent creature by nature.

Victory was looming so close, so tantalizingly close that Zhek-K'tal could taste it. She curved her dainty head around to tease him with a scathing comment; the lust-ridden question sent another wave of energy rippling through the big bronze's body. He barely stopped himself from shooting ever faster through the air toward her; the others were piling on speed now that they saw how close Zhek-K'tal was and how tired Ziinyth seemed, but the bronze was too clever for any of them. He'd been through one too many Flights to fall for a trick -- soon, the shining ruby would execute an agile maneuver that would leave the males in her dust, probably diving or banking sharply to the side. So, instead of speeding up, Zhek-K'tal actually checked his speed a bit, tilting his wings to spill air.
His tactics were well rewarded, for as the ruby suddenly zipped forward, she swooped upward into a mid-air flip. Zhek-K'tal warbled in self-satisfaction as he flared his wings to their fullest extent around him, cupping air into the billowing coppery sail and tucking his hindquarters under him. He transformed his body into another wing, all the muscles along his forequarters and back complaining a bit at the abrupt deceleration. He ignored the twinges in his muscles -- what did not kill helped, and he needed to keep himself in better shape anyway. The big bronze stalled his headlong dash, using the break to crane his head around to search for the ruby. She was quite cunning in her own right, blooding a kill to extend her Flight, but in the end no match for the bigger, smarter bronze. He was still fit for much more of the same antics Ziinyth had been leading them through, being built for slugging through grueling queenFlights, so he could only hold the other males in contempt for the way they were all puffing like bellows with exertion.
He caught sight of the dark beauty as she righted herself with a flourish directly behind him, her gaze raking appreciatively over his profile. He gape-grinned wolfishly at the ruby as she effectively declared him the winner. As if there had ever been any doubt of the result -- Zhek-K'tal was clearly the best of the assembled males competing for the right to twine necks with the beautiful dragoness.
Ah, lovely Ziinyth. You choose well, beautiful one, the bronze practically purred. He spun in an agile corkscrew to face the hovering ruby and reached out to her, cupping his long wings around her to draw her close. His paws closed gently but firmly over hers and his tail coiled tightly in Ziinyth's dark tail, snaring and entangling the two dragons. Zhek-K'tal skimmed his thing tongue teasingly over Ziinyth's cheek before he looped his neck around hers.
The momentum that had carried them soon ran out, but Zhek-K'tal flared his great wings to keep them aloft. From the dizzying heights Ziinyth's merry chase had achieved, this promised to be gloriously long as the huge male's wide wingspan glided them gently toward the ground.
Meanwhile, his rider had slipped up behind K'ist and wrapped his arms securely around the rubyrider's waist. K'tal was too lost in dragon-frenzy to care about his partner; all he could concentrate on was the burning need racing through his body and the imperative to satisfy that visceral craving. His lips traced K'ist's shoulder greedily as K'tal led the rubyrider toward a nearby, unoccupied weyr.

Ziinyth crooned softly as the Bronze Zhek rasped his tongue over her cheek, twining his great neck with her own, and she was pleased. Pleased with the height she'd acheived, forit was enough that if she'd been a queen, she'd have produced a fine clutch from it, her mate, for his great wings set them in a gentle glide that would make this last so much longer than most. Her heart sang with exhilaration, her blood boiling at the peak of lust, at the peak of the flight, for this was the final act, the grand finale, of every Flight. This was the moment that was built up to, that was anticipated eagerly by all.
K'ist was swept away by the lust of the Ruby, by the passion induced by the flight's ending, and by the two great creatures who fell through the sky to the ground. He pitied the males who'd stayed with Ziinyth through the flight, for though it had been short, it had been hard, to gain that altitude at speeds was a feat generally left to the queens and those who chased them, not a Ruby who'd had the wit to blood for the energy she'd need.
As K'tal's lips brushed over his shoulder, K'ist felt the thrill of his own lust mounting, adding to that of the Ruby. One time when the pair were not at odds, when they were not bickering or miserable.
The Rubyrider allowed himself to be led away, the world slowly melting away so that all that mattered was the dragons, and K'tal.

Pure bliss washed through the big bronze every moment the twined pair took to glide down from their lofty height. The losing males, nursing bruised egos from their rejection and a few strained or pulled muscles from the exertion, dropped around the winner and his mate like the russet and gold leaves being shorn from trees in preparation for the coming winter. Their riders waited below, some bound for a brisk dip in the nearest body of water to shake off the after-effects of the Flight, others to search for willing partners to rid themselves of the lust the old-fashioned way.
But neither bronzerider nor rubyrider seemed aware of this, in the grip of their bonded's minds that left no room for any individual though, only those they shared with the great beasts drifting leisurely through the sky. Glorious electricity coursed through their bodies, every nerve alight in visceral delight. There was no feeling akin to the sensation; a sensation that was broadcast by the two mating dragons. Though the Flight was a low-ranked one, the stronger mind of bronze Zhekalenearth sent the waves of emotion much farther. No mere rubyFlight it was, when a king participated.
Before the two riders were completely finished, the pair in the sky were forced to separate. The rocky ground loomed up beckoningly, begging the lovers to dash themselves on its hard surface, to their deaths. But Zhek knew better. Before they got dangerously close the big bronze dientangled himself from the smaller ruby, sighing in regret. It had been a wonderful Flight from the beginning and he was loath to have to stop now, but all good things must come to an end. He gave Ziinyth's cheek one last caress with his tongue before fully releasing her. Beautiful Ziinyth, it was well flown. Truly you are a queen among rubies, for how else could you have led me on such a merry chase? He couldn't resist a bit more flattery, for the pretty ruby did deserve a bit of praise for her cleverness. Only reluctantly do I let you go, lovely one. Although I would dearly love to linger here in the sky with you, it must end. Watch out for me the next time you Rise, for I will give chase again for such a splendid reward such as you have bestowed upon me! With that, he unclenched his claws from around her dainty paws, and swooped upward to make sure he didn't smash ingloriously into the ground.
The big bronze winged his way back toward the Weyr, satisfyingly tired after the exertion of the Flight and the consequent mating, to settle down near the mouth of the ground-level weyr into which the two riders had disappeared. His was dozing after his own tryst, but Zhek was content to wait.
It was with a groan that K'tal woke, sooner after the finish of the Flight than was usul. He sat up, one hand clamped to his head; he wondered through the pounding aches all over his body why he hurt so much. He peered blearily into the dragon's chamber of the weyr, where Zhek's coppery head hovered expectantly. Then, the big bronze uttered a shrill creel of alarm. Mine! Your eyes! Your eyes are red!
K'tal frowned at his dragon. "I wouldn't be surprised if my eyes are a bit bloodshot --"
No, Mine, your eyes are red like a dragon's eyes! Look! Zhek shoved an image into his rider's brain, of what the big fellow saw -- K'tal's eyes widened in horror at the ruby-red color that stained the whites of his eyes. His skin looked sallow, his color was horrible. Typical signs of Zaire.
You see? You have Zaire! Don't die, Mine, please don't die! Zhek pleaded, his eyes a whirling mass of anxious yellows and terrified whites. The racked he was kicking up with his horrified keening was already drawing some attention to the weyr.
K'tal pulled on his trousers and belted them into place, wary of the faces trying to peer aroun Zhek's anxious form to see what he was fretting over. Then he went to his dragon and took the big, copper-colored head in his hands, staring into Zhek's wheeling eyes. "Zhek, cool it. I'll be okay. Zaire only killed one out of four people, didn't it? Odds are I'll live. Take a deep breath and relax, all right?"
It took some convincing to make the bronze calm down, but once he did K'tal clambered into the bronze's back and had him carry his rider back to their own personal weyr. After years at the source of the outbreak, K'tal knew how to keep Zaire from being unleashed in this foreign Weyr. He would stay away from everyone, even making sure the Healers kept their distance. He knew that it by the stage in the illness where he was in the worst state, there was little Healers could do.
Zhek perched on the ledge, dutifully keeping the rest of the curious Weyr at bay. K'tal instructed him to not tell anyone; there was no reason to start a panic. Crystal Cavern had Rogue to deal with, no sense in worrying them over Zaire.
ooc; since Zaire has only cropped up in Eden where they have the immunity, they don't really know that everywhere else the fatality rate is 50%. this will prove to be interesting.
