Would It Be Called A New Mutant?|o.O

M'kay, so I've been thinking for awhile about adding a new mutant to Talune. -Nods- The problem is, I'm not entirely sure if what I have in mind can be classified as a new mutant or, if it can, I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble to take away the fifth non canon color Talune is allowed, and this is where you guys come in. I need a bit of help/approving, because I wanna bump things up in Talune just a touch to put it even with the lovely, violent beasts such as the Magmas of Crystal Cavern, the cruel Blacks of Eden, or the goliath Ambers of New Cove. Something that the Weyr is known for, you know?

I'm wanting to take full advantage of the fact that only an Onyx may sire another Onyx hatchling. From that, I want to do something of the likes that Squid did; the spores and such, but not in that same respect, just something that tweaks things that you didn't really see coming, because you were so used to the way things had remained. Only what it tweaking things is genetics. Things grow over time, correct? Well, that's what I'm going to instill, in a manner. Varanth was the beginning of his line, there hasn't been an Onyx born since his birth, and, just like the dragons of old compared to the ones now standing, his color changes over time. As with the ranks being established, the colors growing, intelligence increasing, things of that nature. The Onyxes now resemble something of this nature:


Not the holes in the wings, but the same sleek build; the easy, smooth hide. Nothing too menacing about them aside from their stature and intelligence. I'm requesting to have the bloodline sort of...perfect itself over time, fix the 'flaws'-nothing of what I would consider a flaw, just an appearance thing to work on-of the past. I was planning to have the next generations gradually resemble something more like this:



I know it differs greatly, and we had a semi issue with the myrr and their evolution, but this isn't evolving. It's as I said, the bloodline taking effect. Varanth hasn't sired an Onyx yet, and he's had ten turns to figure out what exactly his limitations are and what he could have been better at. The request is that that bloodline be able to register said flaws and right itself, hence the new design. Attitude remains the exact same; the only difference is the build of the dragon, a darker, more metallic hide, and perhaps size. Varanth himself stands at 47 meters or feet or whatever we decided was the correct dragon length, and all I'm wondering is if three feet could be added to put him at a more level playing field with the other kings.


I'm sorry if this makes so little sense. It's very late-or early, whatever one would call 4 AM-and my mind gets kinda fuzzy after 2. So, that's it. Unleash the dogs of hell, so to speak; I'm ready for it to be torn to shreds.

While I have no issues with bloodlines perfecting things, I do have an issue witht he time-span for this.

The myrrs evolved over thousands of turns, where this would be only a few, and it's a big change. I could go for a slight change in the color, the seen you want there, and a small change in size, nothing big happens in ten turns, or even twenty. A greadual change, every so many turns, would be fine, and you would eventually get the end result, but I have to say no to a sudden jump so early in the existence of the Onyx, and for it to remain still an Onyx.

i like the idea a lot. and while i do agree about Mittens' concerns, i have an idea or two about how it could work.

i dunno if either of you has read the history of Eden's mutants, but i'm talking more about the way i got ravens -- they're a mutant of blacks that came about when a runty black was addled a bit before the egg was fully hardened. something along those lines could happen -- it's similar to Squid's spore idea too.

if it was some outside influence that made the changes and not time, i see no reason why it wouldn't work. stuff that happens in the real world -- think of what thalidomide did before people realized not to give it to pregnant women.

-Nods- I knew I sounded a touch fuzzy with that all. -Scolds self for neglecting key words- Might I clarify a touch? I don't want that next hatchling to be so entirely different, the only thing I was concerned with was the concept because I could tolerate waiting for that type of thing to occur where it would normally take a grand deal of time. I just wanted to know if the idea itself made sense.

Des does make a good point, though. Dragons are quite susceptible to various things, as everyone has pointed out through the examples of the spores in New Cove, the too-soon-egg-handlings in Eden, and even the eclipse that claims the reason for Talune's various mutants. That is something to ponder over, but I'm glad the concept seems to work with you two. Somewhat ish, at least.

well, the egg was cracked ever so slightly and taken between, but you get the point.

but this argument is central to how we have mutants in the first place -- they're genetically engineered beings, so their makeup would be easier to mess with than something like a flit, that evolved on its own. it doesn't even take much to edit the genetics of real-life humans, if you think about it. -rolls eyes-

but anyway! yep, the concept makes perfect sense to me. that whole concept is pretty much what i based Eden on anyhow. XD
not to mention, it would be a good idea to bump onyxes up in size, considering we have monsters like blacks and ambers and ravens.

Hmm. I think I have an idea to speed up the egg genetics a touch...

Already, of course, the blood that the unborn has contains relatively fifty percent of his mother's genes and fifty percent of his fathers. You all know this. The fifty percent of him that is is father has already passed on a few forms of 'suggestions' in the DNA so that the fledgling has an easier way of life than his sire did with specific adaptations to make that so. These of course are nothing drastic, but subtle changes such as temperament improving for better control of emotions, the enormous pride lingering and thickening, hide coloring to resemble between as the previous generation though slightly rougher, simple things. To get the change I'd want and get it too stick, I really have to traumatize this egg and get it more or less into the fight or flight mode. I have to goad it into the condition that if it doesn't grow to fight this 'infection', it wont survive.

Now, I don't want the go ahead to throw in another sickness: I think we have plenty of them lingering around. But, I do want to use that as the springboard for my little hatchling. His DNA is already fragile, far more than any of his clutchmates because it isn't necessarily planned out yet and doesn't know entirely where it's going to end up. Something as simple as scratching across the egg's surface and into it a few inches could scramble things about quite badly, but I don't want that. I'm not taking the issue to the egg once it's laid, I'm gonna hit it before it even leaves the womb.

Rogue and the Dragon Spores have never had the chance to infect Talune dragons, correct? Mainly because the first cannot since it is an illness reserved to the area and the location of the spores prohibits such an infection. However, there are dragons that have been exposed to each respectively, but not a case of both. Up until now, Talune has been a very...sheltered Weyr. Not much contact gets through between the other Weyrs to it unless it is absolutely necessary, would not you all agree? Only Elain's Okasrith and M'lon of Talune even really attended the Gathering, for Pete's sake. I'm going to be cruel to my own dragons for once (shocking, I know) and take them out of their element and have them visit these two Weyrs with the Senior Queen (whoever she may be at the time) harboring a clutch. Their immune systems, though they will work, aren't used to either area, or even being outside of their territory. Think about that. How well do humans fair when thrown into a completely new environment?

Rogue, obviously, isn't going to play much of a factor aside from distressing the mother, but that's just enough. The emotionless void and the sheer aggression of the former bonded pairs would indeed shock anyone, which is what I'm going to need to distress those little ones inside. Namely, that already uneasy Onyx egg. Apply that same concept to New Cove that I did with Crystal Cavern and you have a weakened immune system that has seen an alien environment, is entirely too stressed, and completely uneasy. How well would that little one, all of them, fair under those conditions?

It could be something so simple that triggers it, just a normal dragon sickness that wont last long at all that the mother will catch, but the combination is enough.

You have the right idea, but I still think it might take more than one generation for the change to be complete. Just me, personally there though.
