"Honuth.. Where are you going?"
Xai stood behind the Magma, arms crossed, watching the female as she paused to look over her shoulder at her rider. Honuth had been headed for, of all places, the Hatching Sands.Up to now the Magma had shown no interest in the eggs since they were lain once she was driven away the first time. Which was the way it was supposed to be with the violent dragon. A Spring had moved onto the Sands once evacuated of the enraged Magma and had since cared for the small clutch. However, it seemed the Magma was taking it to mind to return to the Sands again, and the first thing which leapt to Xai's mind at this was the female meant to have another go at destroying her clutch.
The woman moved closer to her dragon cautiously. She had made progress in her recovery from the last mauling at the aws of her bonded, but she was still sore and was looking at a few more weeks before she would be counted at full health again. The last thing she needed was for Honuth to add more time to that. She stopped again when she drew near the dragon's tail, just far enough away that were it to strike Honuth to swing the apendage Xai would have time to get out of the way.
Honuth blinked once and gave a vague shrug, turning her skull away and once more walking toward the Sands. "Honuth! You wher-faced snake look at me and answer. Where are you going?" Honuth paused once more, shifting her crimson orbs to her rider and growled softly. If you must know, you annoying waste of space and meat, I am going to see my clutch. Today is the touching, and if anyone gets to smash eggs it will be me. The candidates should be reminded of this, and what better way than for me to tear a few of the little meatbags apart? Her tail twitched once before she added more. And if you insult me again, I might be tempted to remove an arm, instead of just breaking those fragile bones of your's. With a final dark look at her rider, the Magma crouched, her proportionately large wings unfurling and sweeping through the air thrice before she launched her mass off the soil and into the sky, air filing the wingsails and ballooning her up. She glided over the Weyr and to the Hatching Sands, rumbling laughter as the Spring who was tending the eggs spotted her and bugled concern. Instantly the reponse from several of the Weyr's males came, and the Magma scoffed silently at them all. Fools.
She circled, spotting Xai haeding in her direction with a rather displeased look on her features, before finally sinking down to the sands, unable to help the rumble of laughter which immediately sprung to life as the Spring charged across the sand to place herself between the Magma and the eggs. Were it in her mind to kill right now, Honuth could have walked right through the little female before her and crushed every egg present before anyone could stop her. Instead, the Magma tossed her head and prowled to the sidelines, settling to the hot ground and folding her wings neatly to her sides. Quiet you. Go back to being a mother before you annoy me and force my paw. I'd rather not sully my claws just yet. She flicked a paw in a dismissive manner, proceeding to ignore the Spring entirely as five large males appeared overhead, alarmed and obviously concerned the Magma was up to no good.
She watched calmly as they came down to place their masses between her and the eggs, and relieve tyhe Srping of trying to fend off the dangerous female. She rolled her eyes and snorted, obviously growing tired of them and their reactions to her. Before Honuth could tell off the males, Xai arrived and shot dark glares at her bonded. "Honuth, what the shells do you think you're going to do? Sit there and menace at everyone? I think not. You have no reason to be here. You can't honestly tell anyone that you have had a sudden change of heart and care one bit about your clutch, or what happens to it, and the Spring is a better mother anyway. Now get your scaly rump back to our weyr." Honuth blandly yawned and dropped her head to her paws, making it obvious without sdaying a word she had no intention of going anywhere.
Before any action to remove the Magma could be initiated, the candidates started to arrive, and Honuth lifted her head curiously to eye the young humans. The gathered males grew more tense, trying to barricade the Magma and prevent her from so much as seeing what was going on as the first of the youths set foot on the sand, and were led forth to the eggs.
