Weyr: New Cove Weyr
Name: Siourea (SEE-or-E-ah)
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Undetermined
Age: 20
Appearance: Siourea, or ‘Rea’ (REE-ah) as her parents had known her, is a tall, willowy thing. She is thin and long-limbed with flowing, billowing, pure white hair that reaches to her knees. Her irises are pink and her pupils are red, as is customary with true Albinos, along with the candidate-robe-white skin. Her eyes hold a distant, separated look in them as if she was never quite sure as to where she was or why she was there.
Rea never shows much emotion, just little flickers of life here and there whenever something catches her interest long enough to pull her into reality. Her gait, when she walks, is creepily smooth. Her hands trace little patterns in the air or on the wall of whatever room she’s in, like she’s tenderly feeling something that no one else can see.
In public, whenever she is able to get out, she usually draws much attention. Most of the time, however, she is kept inside… safe from prying eyes. She can usually be found gazing out a window or staring at nothing in particular, her mouth forming words that only she could hear.
Personality: To most of Pern’s eyes, Rea is utterly devoid of a personality. But to her fellow Psyches… it seems only they get to get a glimpse of the true Rea.
The true Rea is, like most of those born to the users of Dragonspores, so incredibly intelligent that it makes daily life a struggle. She has basically drawn within herself, inhabiting a mental plane that all advanced psyches possessed. Within this place she regularly converses with those she deems ‘worthy’ of her knowledge, other advanced Psyches who, after answering any one of her multitude of philosophical questions, seek her guidance as they battle the everyday boredom of life.
Rea knows this battle all too well, and has long stopped fighting the personal war with the normal, non-sporified folk of Pern. One will never understand a Psyche without being one, something she had to remind herself time and again when she was still capable of working in the normal realm.
In the normal realm, the area of reality belonging to non-sporified folk, she seems insane, but not of a dangerous type or intent. She, to the average viewer, looks caught-up in her own fantasies and delusions that she doesn’t give Pern (or the non-sporified part) a second look.
Certain sensations can jerk her from the Psyche plane. These include the sound of a child’s scream, the screeching of metal-on-metal, the smell of freshly copped onions, and the simple act of someone touching her. The last of these can result in a sudden and very violent change in the woman, sometimes resulting in a mentally-battered person running screaming from the room of some horror they witnessed when their bare flesh touched any bare portion of her. (This is just a precautionary action Rea took when she started retreating into her mind for extended periods of time.)
PS- the only safe way to extract her from her mind is to have an advanced psyche gently touch her mind or enter the Psyche Realm and ask for her to come out. These two ways seem to be the only ways she will willingly come out, though she will only talk mind-to-mind with a Psyche, who will then have to relay the message to anyone around them either by mind-to-mind contact or verbally.
History: Rea was born a bouncing, happy, if not completely normal child. Her parents, having consumed Dragonspores to a point of moderate sporification, did not know of its side effects on the unborn. However, they accepted her with open, loving arms… and minds.
From a very young age she was taught to speak with her mind, even before she could figure out how her tongue worked. It was all very simple at first, flashes of color or oddly-colored mental pictures she sent to her near-psyche parents who would then have to translate from baby mental-gibberish to actual meanings. They, of course (being Sporified), knew she was a born-psyche from the moment their eyes laid on her, so treated her with great honor.
Rea’s favorite thing to do when she was young was to confuse passerbyes in the hallways, sending them the wrong direction with a simple thought planted into their heads. No one suspected the small albino child had such great mental abilities, as her parents, and every other Sporified Pernese before them, kept it hidden.
Her mental withdrawal began with her mother’s death, a tragic accident. Her mother, a moderately Sporified woman who almost touched the boundaries of being a psyche, was simply feeding the watch-wher when a flock of firelizards had attacked. They, the flits, had a high near-hatred for all those Sporified and would sometimes attack in massive groups. Beluna, screaming and raving, had reached out with her mind to her seven-turn-old daughter for help. Rea was young and confused, reaching into the minds of several Flitts and /betweening/ them, hoping for her mother’s safety. However, this was a massive mistake. The rest of the flitters, many still attached to her mother, /betweened/ en masse… dooming the woman they took with them.
Her father, blaming Rea, became dark and twisted in his head. Rea could sense his emotions, try as he might to hide them from her, and knew he meant her harm. And though it took several years for that harm to come to be, it had hurt Rea the entire time.
The ‘harm’ was much more than a mere scolding… no. Mervinne spent the rest of his wretched life beating and sexually assaulting his own daughter, until she could stand it no more. One night, when Mervinne thought she was asleep and thus ripe pickings, Rea had been calling to a beast that lived in their very Weyr. The slimey, plant-like, demonic blob of flesh was sitting, waiting above her door entrance like a good pet, obedient and playful.
The door to her room opened, her red-eyed bastard of a father entering the room with malice and lust in his eyes. He got no further than a step into the room before the beast had let go of the ceiling and fell with a sick, wet ‘plop’ onto the rapist.
Rea smiled in the dark, listening to the comforting sounds of her father being slowly dissolved into food for her new pet, the very thing that made the Spores available to New Cove’s inhabitants.
Life afterwards was uneventful, and Rea, other than the casual contact she made with her beast-pet, withdrew into her mind. No one knew what happened of her father, most thought he had left in the night. Some wondered at the pus-like goo left on the floor in Rea’s room, but none felt like questioning it.
Pets: Beast, what she calls the quivering mass of flesh that lives in the Forbidden Caverns. It is the only thing on Pern she feels a deep attachment to.
Mother: Belune, ex-Headwoman, deceased
Father: Mervinne, Weyrfolk, deceased
Siblings: None
PS- anyone who brings a flitt around her will have to put up with the fact that it would either instantly attack her (and probably be killed), or instantly flee upon it registering what she was.
Beast can be ‘controlled’ by any “Spore-Born”, and Advanced Psyches have a moderate level of control over it. Otherwise, keep clear if you do not want your character to be absorbed, amoeba-like, into its bulk to be slowly dissolved into food… clothes, metal and all. However, Beast is a very slow-moving heap of flesh that only inhabits the ceiling of the Forbidden Caverns (unless called out by Rea or any other Spore-Born), so if your character happens to sight it before it can literally fall onto them then they have a chance at escaping. It is unknown if there are more Beasts or if it is a singular entity.
“Spore-Born” means the child of a Sporified person, born naturally with all the abilities of an advanced Psyche, plus the ability to control lesser forms of life (such as Runners or Lizard-hawks) and the oddity that is Beast.
Fire-Lizards have a natural fear of the Sporified that can result in a mass-attack on any single individual, though rare. However, watch-whers and Dragons alike tend to like those that are Sporified and Spore-born. (As a sort of joke I might call Lessa Sporified, with her unnatural control over Ruatha’s watch-wher and of her ability to mentally push F’lar into that famous duel… and it does make sense when you think about it. ;D)
Spore-Born, for the sake of powerplaying, must always have some extreme weakness. In Rea’s case, it is that she withdraws from her body for extended periods of time, leaving plenty of room for an attack on her to be held.
Plot Possibilities: I am going to put Foreandor up for adoption to take control of this lovely creature. While I am not sure what role she will play in the mini mind-war, it is to not be doubted that it will be grand and very, very misleading.
