Wintergreen grows to 15cm, and flowers in summer. It is used in combination with sage and willow to make a tea that is a remedy for headache. Wintergreen oil is used to flavor candy and toothpaste. The oil contains menthyl salicylate, related to the properties of aspirin. The oil from the plant is easily absorbed through the skin, and is astringent, diuretic, while also a stimulant. It is used externally for muscle aches, especially in foot balms and treatments for rheumatism.
Warnings: The oil can irritate the skin, and must be used only under close medical supervision if it is to be taken internally. Wintergreen should be avoided or used with caution when pregnant.
