K'dran, look here. Dharth was crouched on his belly on the far bank of the lake, staring intently at something. His tail, which was just barely touching the water, twitched restlessly and sent rippling wavelets spreading outward until they were met by the choppy, wind-stirred turbulence.
"What'd you find this time?" K'dran asked with a reluctant sigh. He heaved himself to his feet, pausing to brush the ng of sand off himself, and strolled at a leisurely pace toward where his dragon formed a massive mound of darkness, like a living pool of shadow dappled with blood.
A fire-lizard has laid her clutch here. She is not happy that I am staring at them, but she knows better than to fly at me. I will keep the mother lizard at bay while you gather the eggs, Dharth explained, his mind-voice low but intense, as if in concentration.
At that, K'dran perked up and increased his pace to a brisk jog. "Wow, I thought it was the wrong time of year for flit eggs," he remarked, mostly to himself.
It is young. Probably a first-time mother. Dharth tilted his head up slightly, breathing his hot, sulfrous breath on the little lizard, which K'dran finally saw stooping and banking in agitated patterns around the massive dark head. As the rider approached, the lizard gave a shrill squeal and dove at his head. Dharth's jaws snapped closed mere inches from the flitter's delicate wings, and she swerved aside, shrieking defiance and fear at the big black monster.
K'dran piled all the eggs into a fur he'd brought to lie on and bundled them up securely while Dharth kept the enraged fire lizard from attacking him. Once this was accomplished he promptly loped out of range of the lizard mother and waited for Dharth to get up so he could mount.
This is the perfect chance to test out Ivaris' theory. We shall see what color you get, and see whether you are truly a luckless sod or if it was a fluke that brought me. Dharth chuckled sardonically as K'dran clambered awkwardly onto his back, burdened with the eggs, and rolled his eyes.
"We will see, won't we?" K'dran replied. His voice was absent, he was barely listening. He did have to pay attention when Dharth leaped into the air and went between barely a few dragonlengths above the ground.
When they reappeared above the weyrhold, K'dran bristled. "What the shards was that?" he growled.
What? I saved time. No one was around to see, Dharth insisted, false innocence oozing from his mental voice.
K'dran slid off the towering black shoulders. "Ugh. I dunno why I keep getting bugged by all this stuff you do. You'd think I'd have gotten over it by now."
Dharth strolled leisurely toward the feeding pens. Those fire lizard eggs cannot hear you, K'dran. Stop talking to yourself. People already think that you are mad.
Ignoring Dharth's sarcasm, K'dran carried his bundle into the big, low building that served as the Weyr's dining hall and brought it to one of the hearths along the wall that always had a fire burning in it. He ignored the smell of the rich vegetable stew simmering in the pot over the fire, and set the eggs down on the hearth.
"What've you got there?" one of the weyrfolk inquired, curious.
"Fire lizard eggs, I found them at the lake. Can you get me a pot and sand to put these in?" K'dran explained, gently unwrapping the fur from around the clutch.
The woman brightened and scurried away to her task. K'dran was sure that the whole of the weyrhold would know about this by tomorrow morning. And if Dharth had anything to do with it, all the riders would know within a matter of minutes. A smirk tugged at his lips as K'dran picked an egg out of the clutch, separating it slightly from the main group. It would be his. It was a goodly size, but not quite the biggest. Could be most anything.

Seasons are changing, And waves are crashing, And stars are falling all for us.
.::V'yal~*~Chayth::.
Chayth's dark head lifted from his paws, curiousity wheeling through his eyes, mingled with contentment asnd some small ammount of irritation at being woken. No females were to Rise, not in the area at least, and none elsewhere he saw reason to chase after, and so he was content to sleep away the day. However, words had reached him and V'yal both at nearly the same time, that a firelizard clutch had been found.
Kov was seated on V'yal's shoulder as the rider strolled into the dining hal, quickly nothing K'dran at the foremost of those gathered, and made his way to the wingleader. The little jade gave a chirp as she spotted the clutch, stretching out and craning her neck to peer at te eggs though not leaving V'yal's shoulder. With a chuckle, V'yal stroked her neck and shook his head, as if he really needed another firelizard, unless of course it proved to be one who was willing to be trained. IOne who, unlike his darling little Kov, would listen and sit still for more than a few seconds. Not that he loved her any less for it, but to have more than one like her would reflect poorly.
"Hey there, K'dran. Did you and Dharth find them, or has Dharth threatened off anyone else from getting to close?" With a wide, amiable grin for his wingleader and managed to get Kov to settle back obnto his should and stop trying to lean off to see the eggs.
Chayth yawned mightily, stretching in an almost feline manner before rising to his paws. Without any real purpose in his stride, or a destination in mind, he meandered over to the dining hall, waiting outside for several moments before flopping again to the ground and resting his head on his paws to wait patiently for V'yal to reappear and explain about this clutch. It was indeed out of season, being winter, and though the East had perhaps some of the mildest winters of Pern, it still got cold enough at night for eggs to be in danger.

K'dran snorted as he shooed a few lads away from the eggs. "Dharth found them for me, and wouldn't give up until I hauled them back here. Apparently I have to fulfill a bet. Anyway, do you want one? Perhaps you could get something more cooperative than that little flitter-by you've got on your shoulder now," he remarked, smirking slightly.
Good day, Chayth. Is Yours going to get an egg? Dharth greeted the roan amiably, ambling back over toward the dining hall from the feeding pens, where he'd left the stains from a hastily devoured wherry.
The black lifted his forequarters onto the roof of the dining hall and splayed his paws on the sturdy timbers, pausing for a moment. Then he jumped lightly and pulled the rest of him onto the roof, wings flared for balance, standing gingerly for a moment to be sure nothing would collapse. The roof groaned in protest under Dharth's massive weight, but the tough seasoned wood held, and the black lowered himself onto his belly with a sigh.
Inside, K'dran rolled his eyes. Several people had jumped in startlement when they heard Dharth clambering onto the roof, and were eyeing the ceiling warily.
"It's okay, it's just Dharth," he called, the bit back a chuckle. No one was comforted to know that a huge black dragon was perched on the roof. At least they knew what it was.

Chayth shook his head, unsure himself if V'yal was going to get a flit or not, and then watched as Dharth lifted himself to the roof and settled there. While perhaps it might be a good perch, the roan wasn't sure his weight would hold- at leats not for too long. /I like Kov... Maybe he could get a Roan though. I think a Roan would be good./ His muzzle wrinkled as he thought on it, after a moment giving up and shrugging. /Will Yours?/ He looked up at Dharth curiously. Dharth's didn't seem much like the sort who would enjoy a firelizard, but then again, who knew? Maybe the man had secretly wanted one for some time?
V'yal was one of those who had jumped, though he of all people should be accustomed to some of the things Dharth did. He was eyeing the ceiling warily, Kov shivering on his shoulder and screeching uot her protest at such startlement, when he spoke to K'dran again. "Kov isn't all bad, she keeps Chayth company, and helps keep him clean at least, though I wouldn't mind having another one or two around. Having a trained lizard would prove useful at the very least, and wouldn't get tangled in everyone's hair." He stroked Kov, soothing her, finger sliding over her lovely hide until she finally calmed herself down, and with an indignant cheep she jumped from his shoulder and vanished Between, headed off to perch on Chayth's head. "She's a sweet thing, but you're right. Not an ounce of training, and not for lack of trying." V'yal gave his head a helpless shake, again eyeing the roof. "Dharth isn't going to bring that down on us, will he?"

"I hope not." K'dran glanced up at the groaning ceiling with a scowl. "Because if he makes the roof collapse guess who's gonna have to help fix it?" He raised the volume of his voice halfway through the sentence, to address the black lounging on the roof.
A loud rumble accompanied Dharth's mental retort. Not I. It will not collapse, K'dran, this roof is sturdy. Though a bit worse for wear. You should advise the Headwoman to have someone come up here to fix it before it does come down.
K'dran rolled his eyes. "I'll be sure to pass that along, you big wherry," he muttered. The egg in his hands started to wobble, and the excited cries from several other people indicated that the clutch was about to hatch.
K'dran gestured for the drudges to bring forward the plates of meat, and he snatched up a platter of it for himself. The adult lizards who had gathered began their hum, their eyes wheeling like living jewels from the various perches all over the room.
Yes, K'dran is getting a lizard. He has a bet with Ivaris, as to what he gets. Dharth's rumbling chuckle made a deep counterpoint to the expectant, high-pitched hum from inside the building.

Chayth tilted his head as he looke dup at Dharth, all the more confused by the comment. He remembered the candidate, though he hadn't the slightest clue what the Black meant by His having a bet with her. However, before there was time to question, the Roan was distracted, and more than a little frightened, by a new addition to the party.
A pair of ruby-stained pools gazed scornfully at the Black perched atop the roof, and the Roan looking up at him. A snort fell from her flaring nostrils as the Magma stalked foward, her lithe body low to the ground, wings mantled in a most agressive display. Her spines clicked against eachother as she moved, her body weaving in a serpintine manner, and she rumbled in mock amusement. /Well well, what have we here? Dharth, do you really think it neccesary to sit there of all places? My... You won't even give those inside a good scare that way./ She gave a little snort, turning her head to look at Chayth for a moment, and rather than speak, she acted. Three strides took her close enough to the Roan to make his stumble back, and almost playfully she clicked her teeth just inches from his neck. Oh, she wasn't planning on killing the brute, not since he was currently of use in the Weyr, but rather, she would make him jump at least. Which he did, and how. One moment the Roan was on the ground, the next he was perched on the roof, hiding behind Dharth and peering around the Black. /Oh, you're no fun at all.../ With a snort, she yawned mightily, and settled herself delicately to the ground, looking over heer shoulder as Xai jogged, sporting a noticable limp today, over and past the dragons with scarcely a glance. /I do believe Mine is a little irate today./ This was said thoughtfully, an observation made by a passive observer.
V'yal had grabbed a handful of meat, sighing as again Kov appeared on his shoulder and began humming, adding her light alto to the mingled voices and wrapping her tail around V'yal's neck. Figuring the flit had returned due to the hatching, he was more than a little shocked as the sound of scrabbling came again from the roof, and it groaned dangerously, a notable bend appearing from the combined weight of Dharth and Chayth. What in- Oh. He didn't have to ask Chayth as Xai came in just them, limping, and grabbed herself a handful of meat. V'yal shot a sidelong glance to K'dran, wondering just what was to happen. Personally, he saw no reason Xai would want, or be able to have, a fierlizard, as he rather thought Honuth woud eat the little creature. He shrugged, pushing the thought away and eyeing the eggs, looking up occasionally to hunt forthe tell-tale signs of breakage. So far he saw none, but that didn't mean he wouldn't.
Scowling, Xai scooped up her handful of meat and made her way over to the eggs, people moving aside not only form her rank, or the dragon she rode, but the sheer aura she gave off. without saying a single tghing, or shoving aside anyone, she was standing beside K'dran, ignoring them all and looking at the eggs stoicly. Honuth had decided to play tag this morning, and had done so by swatting Xai's legs out from under her, raking one in the process, hence her recent limp. Easy enough to doctor with a few stitches and enough numbweed though.

Dharth tossed his head slightly, unimpressed by Honuth's display. He was never cowed by the magma's intimidation attempts, being well able to handle himself in a fight. There was no need for him to fear any living dragon, as far as he was concerned. It wasn't arrogance, so mich with Dharth, but confidence.
When Chayth scrambled onto the roof behind him, the big black uttered a rumbling chuckle. Frightened of a magma, Chayth? Coward. He shook his head slightly. He wasn't surprised at the fear the smaller dragon showed, but that didn't make him any less contemptuous of it.
Dharth stood gingerly, keeping his eyes on the roof below him, to be sure it didn't cave in. With the combined weight of the black and roan, Dharth didn't trust the roof to hold them up. And he didn't intend on falling ingloriously through a roof today. He lowered one forepaw to the ground slowly, mindful of the groaning timbers still bearing his weight, then the other paw, wing his wings flared for stabilite in case the roof fell. An ominous crack came from under one of his hind legs, so the big black nimbly jumped, flapping his wings once to add momentum, and swing his haunches off the roof.
Is she? Why am I not surprised? Dharth asked, snorting wryly at Honuth. K'dran is always in a foul mood after I abuse him as well. Though he usually behaves better for a while. He has not made much trouble since I flamed him, he observed, thoughtful now, his head cocked to one side.
K'dran, hearing Dharth's replied to the magma, rolled his eyes. He stepped aside as Xai walked up, giving the magmarider some room. Not as much because he was affected by her aura, but out of respect. Her relationship with Honuth reminded him strongly of his own with Dharth, so he sympathised with the other rider.
A few eggs started cracking open, though the one K'dran held was still in the frantic-rocking phase. He kept it cupped in his hands, patient, idly wondering if he would get a nasty-tempered flit after all, or a more calm one. Just his luck if he'd get a magma flit -- this egg was about the right size. The idea brought a smirk to K'dran's lips.

Chayth grumbled, somewhat disappointed that Dharth was moving -since chayth was trying to use the larger, more agressive Black as a sheild- but remained where he was. Yes I am. Not the least bit repentant of it either, he knew better than to mess with that queen. He was in his right mind by trying to stay out of her way, a fact he had no trouble admitting. However, he was unhappy with the fact that the roof gave another groan, though it seemed to be willing to hold still.
Honuth shook her head, with a snort she dismissed the Roan from her attention completely. He wasn't all that important, after all. Now Dharth... Not that she held anyone with much interest, but the Black was more to her taste in companion than a foolish Roan. I didn't abuse her, per-say. I simply wanted to... She frowned thoughtfully for a moment, searching for the word she wanted, and finding it with a smile. Play. Her tail gave a twitch, her wings settled to her sides. Xai was being lazy earlier, and I thought a game of tag might get her motivated.
V'yal gave a small sigh of releif as one of the dragons on the roof removed himself, and after a quick check of Chayth he found it was Dharth who'd moved. At least that meant less weight up there, and a lesser chance of the roof falling in. His gaze was averted back to teh eggs, confident no timbers were going to come crashing down, and he watched eagerly as eggs started to crack open, their occupants striving for freedom and food.
Xai gave a curt nod to K'dran, noting that he too was bonded to an agressive sort of dragon, who took pleasure in the torture of it's rider. However, as eggs started to crack open, she let her gaze settle, no real expression readable on her face, as she really wasn't feeling much of anything just now. Of course, if she wanted to Impress one of the flits she'd have to think positive, but as of yet she wasn't sure she really wanted to do that. Oh well, she'd have to make her mind up quickly. With a desicive movement, she reached foward and grabbed an egg as it rocked and shuddered, not at all picky about what it was, and started to focus her mind on more pleasent things, so as not to frighten away the little creature if/ when it hatched. Her luck... No, she wouldn't think about what her luck would bring her, as her luck was horrid. Just so long as it wasn't another Magma or a Cyan.

Dharth tossed his head again in the draconic equivalent of rolling eyes and slid his paws out from under him, settling onto his belly with a sigh. The big black rested his head on his forepaws and let the nictitating membranes droop over his eyes. He wasn't in the mood to be pestered by chatty dragons, he felt more like basking in the sun and dozing. He would've gone back to his weyr, but his couch was in the shade this time of day.
K'dran's egg gave a loud crack as a break in the shell appeared, splitting the egg almost in half, smaller cracks spidering out fractal-like over the creamy shell. He set the egg carefully on his lap and grabbed a handful of scraps from his plate, watching the egg closely. A tinge of anticipation welled up in him, and the sardonic smirk still left over from his earlier thoughts softened out a bit.
The egg rocked violently, more tiny sounds coming from the shattering shell, until a few chips fell away from the whole. K'dran saw a flash of mottled color; it was hard to tell exactly what they were. Green, maybe? Brown?
A larger piece came off, and a slim dark green muzzle poked out of the egg, its nostrils flaring delicately as the hatchling took its first gulp of air. Green, or emerald; perhaps a spring. It would be just his luck to get an ill-tempered emerald.
I shall try not to eat it, as long as the little nuisance does not irritate me. What will you name it? Dharth remarked with a half-amused rumble. At least, if it was an emerald, they were relatively smart and could be trained. Better than a green or jade.
K'dran rolled his eyes. Dunno yet. I'll wait until I see what it is to name it. I'm thinking it's an emerald, most greens aren't that dark.
But emeralds are larger than that. It is either a green or a spring, Dharth insisted.

V'yal spared time to watch as the egg K'dran held started to hatch, revealing a mottled head. Ah, so luck was witht he man on personality at least, unless of course it was some fluke, and the little flit turned out to have all the temper and sadism that Dharth did, with a pretty hide to boot. Shaking his head, he looked back at the rest of the clutch -save the one Xai had grabbed- hopefully. Why ever the woman had grabbed an egg he didn't know, most people left it to the hatchlings, coaxing them closer until they were able to stuff the little firelizards so full of meat they slept. He watched, two hatchlings spilling from their eggs at the same times. One was an Emerald, his scales glittering wetly, the other a small Roan. Both were cute, both were colors better for training than a jade. Exuding happy waves to both of the little hatchlings, he held out bits of meat, hoping to coax them closer, and get them to accept the food. Even if he could jus get one of them, maybe the Roan, he'd have something of use as more than a pretty friend. Kov gave an encouraging croon as wel, aware that if either of them bonded to Hers she would have a possible mate in the future. Both were attractive, though the Emerald would outgrow her rapidly and dwarf her.
Xai glanced as the Spring poked her head from her shell, finding nothing of interest in the little flit -it wasn't hers, it wasn't a queen, and it wasn't a king- she let her gaze fall again on the egg she held as it started to quake in earnest, small fragments starting to fal away. She could have sworn she'd seen a glimpse of brown hide, though as the holes that were starting to speckle the shell wre small she couldn't be sure. It might be anything as of yet. Some part of her suddenly yearned for it to be a Green. why she hadn't a clue, save for they were an affectionate lot. A sweet little Green female, yes... A small smile touched her lips, a genuine one, a rare expression that almost erased the scars of her face, drew attention from the rest. Silently, she urged the little creature on, willing it to hatch a Green, willing it to find her worthy. Maybe... Just maybe, it would make up for the abuse of Honuth? If she had a little flitter to love her, maybe she could be happy with the way her bonded dragontreated her? No... It wasn't meant to happen that way, if things went they was she was hoping, Honuth would eat the firelizard just to make Xai suffer for it. Knowing this, she looked at the egg, still slowly falling apart, the holes becomming ever more frequent. With a sigh, she set it back with the rest, stepping a few paces back and shaking her head. Honuth... Why did you make me come here?
Chayth refused to move, hunkering down and making himself as near invisable as possible. Watching with bemusement, Honuth shifted her weight from paw to paw restlessly. Because i felt like it. You need a firelizard. Take one. No one will contest it. Frowning, the Magma peered up at the roof, wondering if she could jump over it, or sneak around to the back and catch the Roan off-guard. She was in a good mood, not really looking for blood or a fight, but more to have a little fun. With Dharth being anti-social, she had little choice, unless of course she wanted to simply roam about the Weyr and wait until she found a better play-toy.

A large piece of the flit's shell fell away, and the hatchling's head lolled out with a weak creel. The dark evergreen-color faded to a bright new-leaf green, and as the little lizard tried to claw its way out, K'dran saw a loamy sepia brown on its paw.
See? A spring. I told you, Dharth remarked smugly. He snorted slightly, his hot break making the grass near his muzzle ripple like water, and his tail-tip twitched a bit like the restless, mindless convulsions of a feline's tail.
K'dran rolled his eyes. Okay okay, fine. You were right. Again. And I owe Ivaris a mark. He paid closer attention to the emerging fire lizard, as the hatchling scrabbled to wriggle her way out of the too-small hole she'd chipped in the egg. Helpfully, K'dran pried a few shards from the jagged rim of the hole, widening it and making sure the sharp edge wouldn't damage the flit's delicate skin.
The spring finally flopped out of the egg with another, slightly indignant creel. K'dran bit back a chuckle and offered her the first scrap of meat; she snapped it up eagerly. He flicked the empty egg and fragments of shell from his lap with one hand while he fed the hatchling with his other hand, unable to fight back a smile at the spring's voracious appetite.
What will her name be? Dharth pressed, his mind-voice an indolent drawl. His rider ignored the heavy sarcasm.
After a few moments of contemplation, still stuffing meat scraps into the spring's mouth, K'dran decided on a name. "Juno." He stretched the hatchling's wings out to dry the thin membrane. "Your name is Juno," K'dran told the spring.
As if in agreement to his choice, Juno looked up at her new master with blue-green wheeling in her eyes, gave a contented croon, curled up in the crook of his elbow and promptly fell deeply asleep.

V'yal let a slow breath of releif as the Emerald crooned to him, stretching his neck out to snap up a peice of meat greedily. Yet as the Roan inched closer, the Emerald snapped at his brother, driving the little creature away to hoard the meat. It was his, and there was a ready supply being fed to him, each peice wolfed down without a thought, and finally, as his belly became too full to even think, the firlizard grumbled and crawled to V'yal's shoulder, coiling around the man's neck and draping himself over a shoulder. Kov was displaced by him, though as she scurried to perch atop V'yal's head she looked down at her new friend and warbled pleasently, sparing no glance for the shunned Roan. V'yal let the male make himself comfortable, waiting until the lizard was fully asleep and no chance of waking him remained before he carefully rose and moved away. For a moment he pondered a name, but quickly enough one came to him, and under his breath, he whispered it to the sleeping Emerald. "Aries." Kov liked the sound of it, whistling happily as she stretched herself out to lick V'yal's cheek without loosing her perch.
Chayth turned his head, curious, but still unwilling to move from his own spot, as V'yal Impressed a flit, an nEmerald it seemed. /He is no Roan, but I suppose having too Roans would be too much for even you, MineOwn./ It was said with as much love as the Roan was able to, no sting holding a candle in the words. It was the truth, to try and keep chayth alone from being fat and lazy was hard work, to toss a second Roan, even if it were a firelizard, into the mix would double the work of the rider, and Chayth doubted it was possible to keep everyone from sleeping and eating all day.
Xai frowned, returning to the eggs just as the one she'd grabbed broke her shell, revealign a stunning little Green who creeled pitiously, her paws scrabbling helplessly as she fell to her side. With a small shake of her head, Xai reached out to grab the little Green, righting her and offering food. For a moment the flit seemed to think twice, her head weaving slowly as though unsure, almost as though the little one was afraid. Remembering to focus on happy feelings and pretty things, Xai scolded herself as she remembered the quiet moments she and Xai had together, those rare, treasured moments when the Magma had no desire to maul or pummel, when she wanted to simply lay on a sandy shore, no one but the pair of them, Xai leaned against the dragon's shoulder... Her thoughts worked, too well it seemed, for not only did the little Green start snapping up food and edging closer, but the shunned Roan came charging over, skittering to a halt as he bumped into Xai's leg, peering up at her and creeling, begging for food. Rather suprised, Xai oblidged the little flit, feeding both until neither could eat another bite, and both the Green and the Roan crawled into her lap and fell asleep, a tangled mess of color as the pair curled together to sleep.
Honuth gave a warble of satisfaction, while there was no guarentee at all that either flit would live to see the end of a week, Xai now had some friends, for the time being. Two of them! Most of the riders ad weyrfolk had walked away either empty handed or with one little flit, but not Hers. Smugly, she completely ignored chayth and prowled to the entrance of the dining hall, turning her head to peer in with her reddened pools. Swirling in contrast to the typical color, were flecks of blueas and green, giving the tone an odd look indeed, but it was her 'happy' look. /Name? You must name them, you know./
Xai said nothing, havging utterly forgotten names, and unable to think of any for either of the firelizards. I... I can't think of any, Honuth... Perhaps you would like to name thwem? Maybe if the Magma gave them their callings, Honuth would be less inclined to make them a snack.
Honuth gave a thoughtful frown, still peering into the building. The Roan will be Ganzen, the Green will be Caile./ Decisively, she nodded, pleased with the names. Not that it would ever stop her if she decided that the firelizards were annoying and would be better as food, but it made them somewhat hers as well.

With Juno tucked into his abdomen, K'dran looked around. When he noticed that Xai had two, he raised his eyebrows in surprise. That was the last thing anyone had expected -- but then again, many were wondering why the blackrider had gotten a flit as well, and how he'd gotten something sweet like a spring. He absently stroked the dark green head of his new pet and watched the magmarider with her two flits.
He glanced at V'yal with his emerald coiled firmly around his throat, smirking at the jade Kov perched on her human's head. He was glad Juno hadn't turned out to be a green or jade -- it would've gotten on his nerves, and he may've even offered Dharth a snack if it had been particularly obnoxious. He wondered of Dharth would kill Juno at some point, too irritated by the spring's behavior.
An intriguing notion, but I prefer peace of mind. Springs are calm enough not to make me think she would annoy me. Besides, if I did eat the little thing, the reaction from you would be more irritating, Dharth replied, and from outside the noise of the black's cavernous yawn was audible. The deep whoosh of air rushing into his gaping maw, and the rumbling exhale that sent low tongues of blue flame licking at the edges of Dharth's muzzle.
Dharth meant what he said. He wasn't feeling compassion for his rider, unwilling to inflict the emotional pain of severing the bond -- that would have been amusing to him, sadistic as he was. No, Dharth was merely concerned about K'dran's behavior after losing the flit. He would no doubt be distressed and depressed; not behavior Dharth was looking forward to having to deal with. Selfishness and not sympathy motivated the big black's statement, and K'dran knew it wasn't a lie.
I find it interesting that Xai got two. I wonder how she managed to lure that roan to her. One would think that her state of mind would be pretty similar to B'tok's. Worse than yours, at least. Dharth chuckled.
K'dran rolled his eyes. Good question. I kinda wonder that myself.
So ask. At least inquire after their names, Dharth commanded, his mind-voice a sardonic drawl.
K'dran really didn't feel like being social. But he asked anyway -- curiosity got the better of him.
"What're you naming them?" he asked Xai, nodding at the tangle of blue-gray and green in her lap.

With Caile and Ganzen secure, Xai was stroking the salt-and-pepper cranium of Ganzen gently. Unquestionably he was a sweet thing, for even in his sleep he was making a sound of contentment, and with an almost feline action he was kneading with his front paws gently. Caile was still, deep in her slumber, though time would prove, once she woke and had energy, she was more agressive than she had any right, and was as quick to snap at others as a Cyan might be. She would prove to be a cunning, sly little beast, and she and Honuth would become an odd sort of friends.
But for the moment, the little Green sleeping peacefully showed no sign of herself. Xai was curious as to how she'd managed to Impress either, much less both, of the flits, however, fearful that she'd find an unsavory answer, she looked for a distraction. One provided itself in a most opportune form, as K'dran approached and spoke, asking after the names of the hatchlings. With a thoughtful expression that could almost be passed as a poor attempt at a smile, she answered, though not in a way most would expect. "Honuth named them Caile, the Green, and Ganzen, the Roan." A she said each name, she placed a finger on the nose of the appropriate firelizard, before resuming her stroking of Ganzen. "What about your's?" Looking up, she fully noticed the Spring he cradelled, a sweet color, reknown for their kindness. The oddity of it was right alongside her own Impression of any flit, and struck her as rather funny, bringing a soft snort of bemusement to voice.
Honuth gave herself a shake, her duty fullfilled having named the little creatures, and now her interest fell to something new. Slyly, she sank low to the ground, skulking around the building in a serpintine manner, her long spines clicking softly against eachother, rustling as their pointed lengths brushed over one another. With the excitement of the clutch, Chayth's attention had finally been drawn away from the Magma, and she was obviously taking advantage of it. As she vanished from sight around the corner, she crouched, her muscles coiling like so many springs, growing taut and ready to unleash. Soundlessly, she bounced into the air, her wings slicing effortlessly through the air and balloning above her, filled with air as she suspended for a heartbeat above and behind Chayth, arching her slender neck as she drew air into her lungs and let a small trickle of flame leak out and lick the Roan's tail.
Just as soundlessly, she drpped back to the ground, slinking out of sight of the Roan and letting a cold smirk cross her maw. He wouldn't be harmed, not enough to inhibit flight, but he'd be scared witless, not that he had much wit to loose, by the time was was done.
Chayth gave a howl and leapt off the roof, claws raking the surface beneath him until he was shoving from the ledge and into the air, to the ground, and spinning to stare warily in the direction Honuth had been. There were some things in life he hated, and having dragons like that Magma around was deffinately one of them.
V'yal strolled over, leisurely, to K'dran and Xai, stopping a short distance and having second thoughts. He didn't fit in well with either, for while he was not so energetic as a Jaderider, in general, he was nowher enear so pessimistic as either of them. With a small shrug to himself, he turned and padded out, to find Chayth disturbed, and anxious, and the sharp stink of fire hanging heavily in the air. "What..."
Word Count: 660 Characters: V'yal of Chayth; Xai of Honuth Notes: Blech, but it's a post, and now my hand hurts very much. T-T

Dharth had been half-dozing, his wings spread around him like huge filmy carpets, black as pitch and flecked with dried blood. It looked, to all outward appearances, like he was paying no attention to what the other dragons were doing. In fact, he was listening closely to them -- especially to Honuth. The big black never let his guard completely down, and when there was a dragon as dangerous as a magma around, even more so. Most of the Weyr had learned not to let their guard down around volatile colors like blacks, magmas, and cyans.
When Honuth slunk around the building behind Chayth, that piqued Dharth's interest. He unlidded his eyes one membrane at a time, until they were completely uncovered, whirling a slow green. He usually enjoyed watching the antics of other sadistic dragons -- like Honuth, or the runty cyan Seth -- except when they were turned on him. They usually weren't, since Dharth was so huge and well able to defend himself.
The big black allowed himself a moment of pride. He was probably one of the largest blacks on record, exceeding even the usual sixty-meter ceiling. He was just shy of sixty-four meters, which was larger than most raven queens -- they usually tipped the scales at only sixty-two or three meters. Dharth was, in fact, just about twice Honuth's size, easily able to sit on the magma and pin her. He wasn't incluned to do that, of course, due to her razor-sharp scales and her multiple spikes.
From the angle at which he watched, Dharth only saw the furtive tongue of flame lick Chayth's tail, and not the perpetrator of the nasty prank. He knew it was Honuth though -- it was odd enough to have one dragon who could flame sans firestone, much less two. It was slightly insulting to Dharth that he wasn't the only one on pern with this trait, and that the other too was in Eden. It rankled, but he got over it.
As Chayth lurched off the roof with a yelp, that did it. Dharth tossed his head back and a great, rumbling roar of laughter bubbled up from his deep chest. That wasn't a trick he'd pulled on anyone yet -- he'd saved that particular pain for K'dran only, as punishment -- and he preferred not to torment his wingmates too badly, because while a healthy dose of fear was helpful to a leader, too much was detrimental. Honuth could do that, because she was a queen, and a rank-and-file wingrider. Dharth had responsibilities. But that didn't mean he couldn't laugh when Honuth did it. It was funny, after all!
The black relayed what happened to his rider, and a smirk came to K'dran's lips when Dharth told the story. If it kept Dharth in a good mood, it was always good. Except when Dharth inflicted his sadism on his own rider, that was bad. But when pain was inflicted on someone else and it amused Dharth, in K'dran's opinion nothing could be better.
But then, Xai's question registered in the blackrider's brain and he came back to reality. She had asked him his name for the spring flitter who was currently coiled contentedly around his forearm. He stroked the two-toned green back absently as he replied, "Her name is Juno."
She was sure to turn out to be the gentlest, sweetest of flits that K'dran had ever encountered. She wouldn't rise often, but her clutches would be as well looked-after as any queen's eggs, and she would throw mostly very healthy babies. She would be trained up to fetch anything her tiny self could carry, and she'd nurse her human when Dharth was mean. She would disapprove of the black's sadism, but learn early on to stay on Dharth's good side.
But for now Juno dozed on, oblivious, not even hearing the thunderous laughter of K'dran's dragon outside. Dharth was still in hysterics at the terrified expression on Chayth's face -- he had one wing cupping his head, like a human putting his head in his hand to muffle impolite laughter.
